The SEAMEO Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts (SEAMEO SPAFA) promotes professional competence, awareness and preservation of cultural heritage, in the fields of archaeology and fine arts in Southeast Asia. It is a regional centre constituted in 1985 from the SEAMEO Project in Archaeology and Fine Arts, which provided the acronym ‘SPAFA’. The Centre is part of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), an international organization dedicated to promoting co-operation in education, science and culture in Southeast Asia.

Synopsis
The SPAFA Workshop on Community-Based Conservation and Maintenance of Historic Buildings/Living Monuments r s-ui i i : brought together an interdisciplinary group of specialists to consider the various aspects of conservation and maintenance of historical buildings and monuments, and to propose an integrated programme of activities which would involve the active participation of communities in the conservation and/or maintenance of these monuments. The Workshop was held in Bangkok. Thailand, during the period August 23-30, 1987. It was attended by representatives of SPAFA Participating Member Countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines. Singapore and Thailand. and consultants/experts from France and Thailand.
